Neuropathy, What is Neuropathy

What exactly are the five stages of peripheral neuropathy ?

You don’t necessarily know that you have peripheral neuropathy until symptoms become more noticeable. It is a gradually progressing condition.

There are actually 5 stages which are not always easy to recognize and it is important that you take control of your condition before it reaches the later stages so you can have a chance to reverse and even completely stop its progress.

Here are those 5 steps:

Stage 1: You will experience some pain here and there in the hands or feet but nothing too dramatic or too often to interfere with your daily chores. You may feel a tingling sensation as well.

But it’s nothing you haven’t seen before. You would probably blame it on doing too much work that day or on being too stressed.

Symptoms in this stage can be triggered by high blood glucose levels due to eating high glycemic foods and junk food in general. Type 2 diabetes can be a triggering factor as well.

Stage 2: The pain is almost constant now. It is very much noticeable and it affects your daily life to the point where you have to see your doctor who may prescribe certain pain relieving medications.

This is a stage where you can still reverse your condition with the right treatment, approach and state of mind.

Stage 3: Pain is now constant and unbearable. You will also start experiencing numbness and your risk of getting injured increases during this stage.

There is almost a complete loss of sensation and in severe cases even amputation may be necessary to perform.

Stage 4: As pain starts to decrease, the numbness and loss of sensation increase, and your legs may become completely numb during this stage. You won’t be able to walk and your balance can be completely off.

Stage 5: The risk of amputation at this final stage is unfortunately the highest. You may no longer feel your legs or feet and may experience a complete loss of sensation.

The nerves are no longer able to send signals to your brain. Nerve damage is permanent at this stage.
